Harvey L. Hinson

Harvey Lee Hinson is a Virginia artist whose paintings emerge from both memory and experience—shaped by his travels across the country, the serene flow of the Rappahannock River, and the rhythms of rural life. Working in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, he begins with sketches or photographs yet lets each piece breathe and transform, inviting viewers into an unfolding visual story.

A Journey in Art & Heritage

Harvey’s path in art formally began in 2009 under seasoned instructors—but his creative spark dates back decades, to childhood paint-by-number kits and evenings spent learning alongside TV painters and Walter Foster’s How to Paint guides. Under the mentorship of Anne Chaddock, those early experiments coalesced into artistic discipline. Rooted in his upbringing in Virginia’s Northern Neck—where his lineage traces to London indenture, watermen, farmers, and harness racers—Harvey’s work draws on the natural beauty and personal legacy of his surroundings.

Harvey’s Story

The Story Behind the Canvas

Harvey often begins with memory, a photograph, or a quick sketch—then steps back as his work evolves in unexpected ways. “Sometimes the outcome is very different from the original idea,” he shares. “I take joy when a viewer discovers something I hadn’t intended—that’s when a painting truly comes alive.” Through oil, acrylic, and watercolor, his art becomes a living tribute to Virginia’s landscapes and the echoes of his family’s past.

Artistic Community & Practice

Harvey’s technical mastery spans oil, acrylic, and watercolor—each medium chosen for its ability to bring memory and landscape to life. As an active member of the James River Art League, Virginia Plein Air Painters, Rappahannock Art League, Tuckahoe Artists Association, and Crossroads Art Center, he generously shares his art through live demonstrations and workshops, nurturing creative dialogue and community engagement.

Service, Leadership & Family

Beyond the easel, Harvey’s civic and academic accomplishments reflect a lifelong dedication to community. Holding multiple degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University—including a Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning—he served as Brookland District Supervisor and Deputy County Manager of Henrico County. He has also served on the Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Capital Region Airport Commission boards, further reflecting his dedication to civic leadership. A U.S. Army veteran, Rotarian of more than 45 years, Paul Harris Fellow, and ASA Softball Hall of Fame inductee, Harvey’s life demonstrates a commitment to service in many forms. Alongside his wife, Brenda, he is grounded in faith through Shady Grove United Methodist Church and treasures the joy of their six children and twelve grandchildren, who remain his greatest source of inspiration.
